Serbian Orthodox Funeral Customs Explained

Written by

Jovan Petrovic

Serbian Orthodox funerals share many core beliefs with other Orthodox traditions but have distinct customs that reflect Serbian culture.

The Wake

Traditionally, a vigil is kept over the body. Family and friends gather to pray and offer condolences.

Koljivo (Boiled Wheat)

Koljivo, a dish made of boiled wheat, sugar, and walnuts, is prepared for the funeral. It symbolizes the resurrection of the dead, as grain must be buried in the earth to grow.

The Daća

Following the funeral, a memorial lunch called the Daća is held. It is a time for family and friends to remember the deceased and share stories.

Memorial Services (Parastos)

Memorial services are held at specific intervals: 40 days, 6 months, and 1 year after death. These are important times for the family to gather and pray.
