Coping with Loss: An Orthodox Perspective

Written by

Father Demetrios

Grief is a natural response to loss, and in the Orthodox tradition, it is a journey we do not walk alone. The Church provides a framework of prayers, services, and community support to help us navigate this difficult time.

The Role of Prayer

Prayer is central to the Orthodox understanding of grief. We pray not only for our own comfort but for the soul of the departed. The Trisagion prayers and Memorial Services (Parastas) offer a way to maintain a connection with our loved ones.

Community Support

The parish community plays a vital role. From the wake to the funeral service and the makaria (mercy meal), being surrounded by fellow believers provides strength and solace.

Hope in the Resurrection

Ultimately, our grief is tempered by hope. As St. Paul wrote, we do not grieve as those who have no hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). We believe in the resurrection and the life of the world to come.
